Andreu World released a series of chairs and barstools during the last Milan fair that took place last April. The highlight of their collection was the new line designed by world renowned designer Patricia Urquiola named “NUB”. In this collection, you will notice the common trends all designers whether in fashion or architecture are leaning towards. The trend is “the back to basics”, where designs were simple and part of a “natural” and somewhat rugged interior. Check these chairs, and see how differently they look once applied to the proper setting.
Roche Bobois to many means the stylish modern and fresh contemporary furniture brand, to others its their favorite provincial style furniture with charm written all over it. Both styles have allowed it to become one of the most popular furniture brands worldwide appealing to a very large number of tastes. In a previous post I included photos of their contemporary collection showroom here in Kuwait, in this one you see exclusive photos of Roche Bobois’ Provincial showroom located adjacent to the first one, also at 7 Zones in Shoueikh.
“Provincial” is a description which means items pertaining to the Provence of France, designers there are known for their intricate details and rustic finishes. The woodwork is mostly handmade in the Provence by craftsmen known for their skills for ages. The introduction of bright colors to many of their signature pieces gives the classic designs a twist and distinct appeal.
Roche Bobois accessories are a world of their own, some are not part of our daily lives anymore yet look wonderful within the setting they are intended for.
In celebration of its 100th anniversary and for the Milan Furniture Fair 2011, Trussardi relaunches the Trussardi Design brand through a new collaboration with world renowned designer Michael Young. During Milan’s Furniture Fair 2011, Trussardi presented at Palazzo Trussardi Alla Scala in Piazza della Scala 5 a collection that Michael Young designed to relaunch the Trussardi Design brand. Inspired by Trussardi’s commitment to product design that was amply developed in the eighties and nineties, Michael Young’s collection is the result of his research of Trussardi’s archives to review the history of the brand and its values and transform it into inspiration for his new contemporary products.
Checking out one of my favorite websites, Yatzer, I came across their post with the Hermès collection in details as revealed in Milan this past week. Most people were looking forward to the final debut of this long awaited collection. In my post about Hermès Maison, the collection was still vague, with information of their collaboration with Dedar for their wallpaper and home fabric collection.
The beautiful exhibition space was mainly made out of cardboard tubes woven with paper. The Pavilion incorporated rooms of different sizes resembling the spaces of a home, some private and some shared. When pieces have such simple structure and form, quality is crucial. The luxury prevails through the material used and the fine finishing details of every part of every piece.
Another amazing creation by Zaha Hadid in the furniture industry, a chair that simply looks like a signature, a mere “Z”, yet so futuristic and beautiful. Only she can pull this off and be admired for it. Zaha Hadid designed this chair for the Italian furniture company Sawaya & Moroni owned by Lebanese designer William Sawaya and Paolo Moroni. This chair was presented this week as part of Milan design week 2011.
As I have mentioned numerous times before, Salone Internazionale del Mobile, also known as Milan Furniture Fair, is the fair that designers and suppliers look forward to the most among exhibitions of the same nature. During this fair all brands and designers showcase their latest designs and trends for the coming year. In this post I will show you a preview of a few of the items that will be highlighted at the fair.
This Fair, Vitra will introduce the new Tip Ton Chair, that was designed in cooperation with British design studio BarberOsgerby.
The rocking base of the chair allows dynamic sitting which stabilizes the spine and encourages blood circulation. I am definitely getting one of those. This chair is stackable, comes in many colors, and best of all moves with you.
FAVN is the Danish name for ‘embrace’ and will be launched at Republic of Fritz Hansen’s showroom in Milan on Corso Garibaldi, 77 during the Salone Internazionale del Mobile 2011. The new sofa will be available to purchase from Republic of Fritz Hansen stores and selected authorized Republic of Fritz Hansen dealers from around the world as of September 2011.
The most awaited furniture and design exhibition which takes place in Milan, Italy will be celebrating its 50th birthday. During this event most manufacturers and designers worldwide will showcase this year’s trends and new creations.
This year French luxury brand Hermès will launch its first furniture range during the Salone Del Mobile which will be taking place between April 12th till 17th, 2011.
To me as a designer, reviving Roche Bobois in Kuwait was such big news. I couldn’t wait till they opened and I had no idea this is how a lot of people felt as well. Even before the doors were officially open, customers were swarming, which is an indication of how aware people in Kuwait are becoming of high quality and uniquely designed furniture. It is sad how other shops are just importing distorted “replicas” and ruining the general taste. I was lucky enough to obtain these exclusive photos of the showrooms located in the newly established 7 zones Design Center, Shoueikh.
Roche Bobois is a French brand that officially began under its name in 1961, the creators however, started in the furniture business as early as 1930. Roche Bobois is now available in over 40 countries with a total of 240 stores. The collections under Roche Bobois are mainly two. Les Contemporains, which houses the designer labels, the modern and unique pieces, the latest techniques, and exclusive finishes. The second collection is Les Provenciales which reflects the work and artisan of the French country men, a charm not found in any brand you’ve seen. This collection gives “classic” a whole new feeling, a feeling that is appealing to everyone. All techniques in this collection hold the authentic methods and finishes.
Pro-design group brought Roche Bobois back to Kuwait in a 1200 m2 space showcasing the two collections in separate yet adjacent areas. Each area reflects the mood and spirit of the collection itself. The light partitions, finishing, and wallpaper used in the showroom are actually a big hit among customers and passers by. The accessories and playfulness of some items leave an impact on every client walking in. I am actually impressed with the turnover of the furniture and the thirst for good design.
I have met at least 20 clients who are requesting the “Roche Bobois” feel in their homes. The entire showroom and the collections are meticulously displayed and adorned with the most beautiful accessories. New pieces are added regularly, with every visit you will find something gone and something new. In this post I emphasized some of their “Les Contemporains” collection. Wait for a second post with photos from “Les Provenciales”.
Roche Bobois Kuwait have created a facebook page with DAILY updates of furniture and elements from their extremely wide and exclusive collections, I suggest you join their page for the latest updates.

The famous brand for mosaics, Bisazza, just debuted a line for bathroom fixtures. The launch of their line Bisazza Bagno was designed by the famous designer Jaime Hayon, with an obvious plan to commission future projects to other famous designers. This line was revealed at at ISH in Frankfurt.
According to the designer’s website:
“The collection recalls the glamour of the 1930s with a Scandinavian touch and feminine shapes. Elegance is the main trait of this innovative collection. The bathroom is the most important room in the home and it should not be hidden. With this collection, it becomes an area you want to show, a place you can keep open. The bathroom becomes a stylish room, full of charm and style, with a strong identity.”
The first impression you would get when viewing this piece of furniture is probably mixed. There is some kind of “violent beauty” to it. French artist Vincent Dubourg’s works are like that, full of thrills and an unexpected “exploding” character. Once you look closely, you will notice the beauty of the materials and quality of work. These pieces can not go unnoticed, you either love or hate them.
The art Dubourg has presented is not the conventional art, it does not rely of form, yet on the structure and interior of each piece.
For Milan Design Week 2011, world renowned crystal company Baccarat chose to showcase lighting solutions as proposed by eight of the most famous designers. One of these international designers is Philippe Starck who designed the ‘Marie Coquine chandelier’ making use of LED technologies. This chandelier features a classic looking candelabra which is structured around an umbrella. This umbrella acts as a canopy which diffuses the light to create a mellow ambiance.
Minotti presented their “Senza Tempo” collection last April put together by the famous Rodolfo Dordoni who has been coordinating their collections since 1997. The surprise in this collection was the emphasis on the Cobalt Blue color, an approach not usually taken by the minimalistic designs of Minotti. The way they introduced the blue gives us an idea on how to introduce such a bold color without losing the classy and neutral ambience often known as Minotti’s signature.
Cappellini introduces a special range of unique arm chairs, inspired by the soon to-be-released Walt Disney Pictures film TRON: Legacy. These armchairs will be individually hand-finished – each uniquely designed- by Dror Benshetrit who pays homage to the digital landscape of the Outlands terrain in TRON: Legacy. These collectible works of art will be presented in the Cappellini/Poltrona Frau Miami… showroom during Design Miami 2010, as an official satellite show of Design Miami from December 2 through Dec. 10, 2010.
In last April’s Fuori Saloni (Milan Fair) in Milan, Nika Zupanc released her 2010 collection in a creative and fun pavilion designed as a tiny house with toy like windmills. Her exhibition was titled “ Gone with the Wind” . The objects she designed are characterized with total femininity, there is no way you can just ignore them, they are very delicately designed. Zupanc has designed for the famous brands MOOOI and Moroso. The first few photos are from her 2010 collection, you can scroll down to see her other designs.
In 2008 Karim Rashid collaborated with Della Rovere and designed two desks, Zero and Uno. The ZERO (pictured above) is free-standing body molded in thermosetting resins and reinforced with fiberglass.
These desks are the concrete expression of how office furnishing has changed. The two collections stand out for the use of thermo-hardening resin with fiberglass and high density polyurethane – innovative materials for this sector. The Uno desk won the 2008 Good Design Award.
Wilkhahn | Graph Chair Designed by Jehs + Laub
Designers Markus Jehs and Jürgen Laub develop a new, high-end range of conference chairs for Wilkhahn. At the design’s core is a seat shell that can be divided and put back together differently, with the armrests becoming the main link between the seat and the backrest. The original, unitary shell shape is still recognizable, but a high level of visual lightness is achieved by the cut-out section and open armrests.
Ok Well I know I already posted about “lit” outdoor furniture by Vondom, in fact its the trend now and looks amazing. They add a glamorous and trendy effect without trying so hard. Since outdoor furniture is a big hit now for most furniture companies, many have introduced complimenting accessories, such as vases, lighting, special hammocks, and carpets. Below is a selection from a few brands and where to find them in Kuwait. My post on outdoor furniture
“Keep your love of nature, for that is the true way to understand art more and more.” Vincent Van Gogh
It is Outdoor season in many countries now such as those in the gulf, in order to help you decide and check out what’s hip and what’s new, I put up photos of some of the most beautiful outdoor furniture and pieces from various brands. Some have just been released and others have become icons in the recent past. With the wave hitting the outdoor furniture designs, it is not surprising that most brands are collaborating with some of the world’s most talented designers to release signature pieces. Some of the designers have done outdoor pieces for more than one brands and have found success in all. (more…)
I am often approached regarding design ideas for kids rooms. In this post I will put some tips along with photos that portray different styles and solutions.
Photo above from: Ghislaine Viñas
1- Use calm colors in general, if you would like bright colors use them in small quantities, such as accessories and rugs, calmer colors give the child a better sense of serenity suitable for sleeping and relaxing. For best health benefits try to use Lead free paint for kids areas.
My friends, meet MILK, a very stylish and practical desk that keeps you clutter free & organized.
So the summer season is over, but outdoor season for many countries has just begun or about to. In Kuwait we are still in the 32-42 degrees Celsius range, but hopefully soon it will cool down. In the light of that I will put up a few posts focusing on outdoor furniture to help give you an idea of the current trends.
For those who like hip & designer outdoor furniture, one brand to look out for is Vondom.
Vondom has the most complete range of outdoor furniture worldwide produced by the rotational molding process, offering widest variety of colors and patterns ever created. The technique can produce high quality products with a multitude of features, and as a result become unique pieces.
It is amazing how designers get inspired. At the Maison et Objet Fair last September , Nini Andrade Silva, winner of the 2010 award for best hotel interior design, presented her first furniture collection ‘Garota do Calhau’ which means ‘Girl of the Pebbles’. As the name implies, most of her work starting from her early paintings, to her interior designs, and lately to her furniture is inspired by the nature and beauty of pebbles.
“Funky” is the new “trendy” when it comes to modern casual seating these days. With fashion houses, well known designers, and brands entering the furniture world, statements and designs that stand out are only natural. Roche Bobois introduced their “ Mah Jong” modular seating in the 1970s by Hans Hopfer . After working with Kenzo maison and Missoni home on several fabirc finishes, this year Roche Bobois decided to work with Jean Paul Gaultier . Roche Bobois presents its vintage Mah Jong sofa, in a new “bleu blanc rouge” look as opposed to the very colorful fabrics of Missoni and Kenzo. Personally I loved this years edition of this sectional. In addition to the Mah Jong, Jean Paul Gaultier worked on numerous items as part of his collaboration with Roche Bobois. The Mah Jong sectional, like modernism itself, has never gone out of fashion.
Another very attractive, modern, and hip sofa is the Confluences designed by Philippe Nigro for Ligne Roset. “Confluences may be considered to be a trailblazer in terms of the new trend for ‘counterforms’ as characterized by the interwoven yin-yang or puzzle-type effect. It will be just as pleasing to lovers of radical design, pioneers searching for a sofa which is totally different from any other, as it will to all those who are seduced first and foremost by the freedom of posture and unheard-of conviviality offered by its colorful, unbridled compositions.” You can get in monochromatic colors as shown or play with the colors and composition.Confluences was introduced by Ligne Roset during the 2009 Imm Cologne Fair.
Quilting is back, and now its not exclusive to the classic furniture brands and designs. The detailing that was once a signature of the English Cigar lounge look has now been recreated, thanks to one of the top brands in the furniture industry that is known for its luxurious leather lounges and out of the ordinary designs. Baxter is a “unique brand devoted to a sophisticated clientele which appreciates contemporary luxury and moods that are consistently new and amazing”.
Last year Baxter released one of their icon pieces, the Chester Moon by the very famous architect and Designer Paola Navone. It was released as part of an African inspired project presented at the 2009 Maison et Objet. In this collection, leather is presented as a new and versatile material, which is the utmost expression of quality and naturalness. Paola Navone reveals a decorative, new and unexpected side of leather in this line.
The Chester Moon sofa is a fully handmade sofa that takes up 45 days of manual labor.
Baxter’s Chester moon comes in 4 dimensions and reaches up to 395cm. Whatever the finish or dimension it should be treated in the space its in as a “statement” piece, against it should be a contrasting mellow yet elegant item that would allow it to accentuate. In an amazing AD by Nespresso and featuring George Clooney, the Chester Moon sofa was used to portray a cloud in heaven, which is exactly how it feels.
